Carrie Johnson is a recent grad of Alliance Theological Seminary and is currently serving as the director of spiritual formation at Living Word Reformed Church. She and her husband are currently in transition as they follow the call of God to plant a missional hub in Edinburgh, Scotland—a community called East Mountain. The vision of East Mountain is to come alongside and empower ministry leaders across Europe through mentoring in spiritual formation, leadership development, and theological training so that they can multiply the work of the kingdom in the contexts where they are called to serve.

Tim Breen is lead pastor at First Reformed in Orange City, Iowa, and enjoys facilitating biblically centered pilgrimages to Israel. He and his wife, Tamara, have three children and love good movies, steak, and Sunday afternoon naps. Tim is a devoted fan of Michigan football and the Detroit Tigers, and spends his free time running, biking, and doing impersonations of other members of the staff.

Well, today, I wanted to invite you outside of my office here in Orange City to show you something. Take a look at this tree. Many years ago, a sidewalk was poured over the buried roots of this tree. A slab was laid over the spot. The concrete was leveled, the surface was smoothed, and the roots of the tree were cemented over.

But look here at what’s happened. Over time, the depth, the growth, the organic energy of the tree hasn’t just dislodged the slab. It’s broken right through it!

Have people been pouring concrete over your dreams? Have people been hemming in your hopes? It might have happened when you were a kid; it might have happened this morning. How are you dealing with the slab?

The thing about roots is that even though you can’t see them, they’re working. They’re exerting force. There’s a breakthrough on the way. It’s not just possible, it’s inevitable. The root always wins. Placed within proximity of a deeply rooted tree, the destiny of the stone is defeat. It’s fracture.

This Lent, we consider Jesus, who was buried. Covered with a slab. Sealed for dead, guarded to prevent a gospel from being shared. But Jesus, who Scripture calls “The root of David,” broke through in power and glory. Like at the stone table of Narnia, a magnificent crack of hope and victory pierced the mournful sadness of Jerusalem with joy and expectation. The seal was broken. The king had risen!

What’s true of Jesus is true of his bride, the church, and it’s true for you, too, if you’re rooted in him.

“Rooted” is a video devotional series intended to help you seek God’s face this Lent. Each short video explores a piece of our rootedness in Christ: “They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper” (Psalm 1:3). The videos were created by RCA women and men in partnership with Women’s Transformation and Leadership.

Parishioners at St. Croix Reformed Church this Sunday morning will miss the benediction given by the Rev. Rodney J. Koopmans, in which he urged them, as he held his hands high, to go forward into the world in peace. Koopman’s died unexpectedly early Tuesday at the age of 71.

He will also be missed in many other parts of the community. He was the director of My Brother’s Table, a soup kitchen in Frederiksted that serves the homeless a noon meal Monday through Friday. He was also active in the Interfaith Coalition on St. Croix and started Jazz Vespers at the church. He was also on the board of directors at King’s Hill School for about 15 years. The school, run by his wife Janie, was closed after 15 years after the Hovensa Refinery closed.

He had awakened at midnight Monday and told his wife he couldn’t catch his breath. She drove him to the hospital, but by the time they arrived, he was gone. The doctors believe it may have been a blood clot that originated in his lungs and are referring to it as a cardiac incident.

He had been the pastor at the Reformed Church for almost 20 years. Before that he had been a pastor in Fishkill, New York, for 15 years. Before that he was a pastor in the country of Oman.

He told his wife, with whom he had celebrated a 50th anniversary last year, that he never thought about retirement, he said, because. “I love what I do.”

His son Dirk, who flew in from Germany this week, said in an interview about his father, “He firmly believed in a church for everybody.”

He said his father mentored the first female pastor in the Reformed Church because he believed in her ability.

Koopmans was often on the vanguard of those promoting the rights of all people. During his college years, during the civil rights movement, he went into the South to help register blacks to vote. On St. Croix, he was one of the few pastors to officiate at same-sex marriages.

In his sermons he often mentioned how blessed he felt to be living on St. Croix. One of the successful projects he promoted was the installation of a 10-kilowatt wind turbine at the church on top of the hill in La Reine in 2012. His goal in that project was not to “save the church money,” but to redirect the money to charitable efforts more worthy than paying an electric bill. One of those efforts was the donation of a copy machine to Alfredo Andrews Elementary School.

Rose Carty, manager of My Brother’s Table, said they closed in memory of Koopmans on Thursday. She added, “He was a good spirit and was a good hearted person.

For pleasure, Koopman’s liked to play golf, but did not find much time for it in recent years. He was a fan of P.G. Wodehouse, the English humorist, and had read most of his novels.

He was born in Wisconsin and attended Western Theological Seminary in Michigan. He met Janie their first day of college. Besides his son, Dirk, he has a daughter, Lara Koopmans- Hiller.

A memorial service for Koopmans is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Reformed Church. Donations can be made in his memory to My Brother’s Table, RR01, Box 6125, Kingshill, VI 00850

The Rev. Dr. Carol Bechtel is professor of Old Testament at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. She preaches and teaches widely and is a General Synod professor of theology in the Reformed Church in America, as well as a former General Synod president. She grew up on a farm in Fulton, Illinois, and is the daughter of Rhea and the late Glenn Bechtel.

One of the things that keeps me “rooted” is reading the Psalms every day. And there’s one particular psalm that reminds me of my roots. Psalm 86 (NRSV) says,

But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
Turn to me and be gracious to me;
Give your strength to your servant;
Save the child of your serving girl.

Did you catch the psalmist’s argument there? “Be gracious to me—A) because I’m your servant, but even more so because, B) my mom is your servant.” It’s as if the psalmist is saying, “Look, you may not remember me, but I KNOW you remember my mom. Do it for my mom’s sake!”

I’ve always suspected that when I pray, God says, “Oh, it’s Rhea’s girl again—I guess I’d better see what she wants.”  Maybe that’s fanciful—and I’m pretty sure it would embarrass my mom. But there’s something sweet and, well, inspiring about the psalmist’s recognition that his mom and God are “like this.” Maybe, by God’s grace, we can be, too!

Remembering Pastor Rod

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pastor Rodney Koopmans.  Pastor Rod went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 15th.
The thoughts and prayers of the St Croix Reformed Church community are with the Koopmans family.  We are eternally grateful for Pastor Rod’s 20 years of service and contributions to the St Croix Reformed Church.  We will deeply miss Pastor Rod but rejoice that he is with our Lord, Jesus.
